1 Jul, 2010

The excitement built as a THOUSAND school pupils gathered at Newquay Cornwall Airport on Wednesday 23rd June to race electric cars that they designed and built from scratch. It was the annual Cornwall College South West Regional Heat of the Greenpower schools electric car races at Newquay Cornwall Airport.

Organised by Cornwall College, Greenpower allows children to design and build electric cars, finding their own sponsors, resources and support they need to make their designs reality. The project incorporates maths, engineering, physics, design, marketing, team building, technology, problem solving & communication, and aims to spark students interest in engineering and technology in an exciting and unique way.

Students from more than 40 local primary schools took part in a number of skills-based tests including a drag race for their chance to win a trophy for best presented Goblin car as well as individual competitions. Keen to be involved with the action ESN sponsored St Mewan School to build and make their Kit Car. The school chose a dedicated team of 12 pupils, working in their own time in an after school club and the team all got a chance to race at some point during the day.

With sustainability in mind, this year saw the addition of a new specially-created competition. The most sustainable car with Cool Earth, the rainforest charity, being the judge of the competition and offering the prize being sponsorship of areas of rainforest. ESN is delighted to announce that St Mewan School came third despite it being their first ever completion!

ESN also had a presence at Greenpower, first Sustainability Fair which ran alongside the main event. A number of sustainability companies and agencies exhibited with the aim of educating pupils, parents and staff with regards to sustainability in a fun way and also to build greater links between the companies, local government agencies and schools.
