Bright Green Teams up with Green Power and Cornwall College!
24 Jun, 2011
Once again ESN had a presence at the South West's regional event of Greenpower (a competition where schools from all over the country design, build and race electric cars. The event, organised regionally by Cornwall College’s Vaughan Curnow, aimed to spark interest in engineering in an exciting and unique way and took place at Newquay Airport on 23rd June.
The previous year, ESN had sponsored local primary school, St Mewn, to take part and race in the event by purchasing for them an electric kit car. However, ESN saw the event as a huge opportunity to also hold their 'Bright Green' event (aimed at getting local environmental businesses involved with young people to enthuse and inspire their interest in environmental technology and careers) within the Greenpower event and so joined forces with them and Cornwall College to do so.
ESN also worked with Cornwall Learning’s Sustainability Co-ordinator & STEM Advisor, Rachel Delourme, in an effort to provide interactive ‘hands-on’ events with our environmental businesses so that we could capture the children’s interest in the environment, sustainability and possible environmental career - there was a drive to make all stands truly interactive elements e.g. using a wave hub model to generate power in a water bath, making a cob wall etc.
However, this year, ESN also sponsored and made available at the event an unique collection of portable science sets designed to encourage active discovery based learning for all ages. The sets gave students the opportunity to explore scientific phenomena through a collection of stimulating and engaging science centre style portable interactive mini-exhibits. The sets were made up of a number of thematically linked mini-exhibits (covering topics such as Energy, Forces and Structures) along with resource material for teachers and students which encouraged students to see the links between the science they are exploring and real-world applications.
The excitement, enthusiasm and activities of the whole day made it a great success for all!
